Why Australia is different

"Telstra covers 99.5% of the Australian population but only 62% of the land area — a gap of roughly 2.5 million square kilometres. Optus covers under half of the continent. For Uluru, the Kimberley, or Cape York, Telstra is the only real option."

Australia is the sixth-largest country by area and one of the most cellular-dependent tourism markets — distances are huge and road trips are the default. Telstra has the only meaningful outback and remote-road coverage; Optus and Vodafone are urban-focused.

Our Australia plans use Telstra primarily. For the urban-only traveller staying in Sydney, Melbourne, and Cairns, Optus is fine — but anyone driving the Red Centre needs Telstra routing.

Coverage you can actually measure.

We run Australia on 2 carriers so your profile falls back automatically if one signal drops. Coverage figures are measured against our own uptime data, not carrier marketing claims.

Troubleshooting

  • Outback driving: Telstra is the only carrier with a hope. Optus and Vodafone drop frequently beyond major highways.
  • Great Barrier Reef day-tour boats have coverage to ~15 km offshore. Outer reef trips go beyond.
  • Uluru has full Telstra 4G at the resort and the rock; walking trails are fine.

Who Australia eSIM is built for.

  • East Coast road-tripper

Sydney to Cairns via the Pacific Highway. Telstra covers the entire route with only brief gaps.

  • Red Centre tourer

Uluru, Kings Canyon, Kata Tjuta. Telstra-only coverage — Optus will fail you here.

  • Great Barrier Reef visitor

Full 4G in Cairns and Port Douglas. Inner reef tours have coverage; outer reef is offline.

Questions people actually ask.

  • Telstra is the only Australian carrier with meaningful remote coverage. Along major highways (Stuart, Eyre, Victoria) Telstra has nearly continuous 4G. Off-highway remote areas beyond 50 km from a road have no cellular service on any carrier.
