Country comparison

United Arab Emirates vs Singapore

The two best transit-hub airports in the world for layover travellers. Both have world-leading 5G.

Last updated 2026-04-14

Key takeaway

"Singapore has effectively 100% 5G coverage of its land area; the UAE has world-leading peak 5G speeds via Etisalat. Singapore wins on consistency, UAE wins on raw maximum speed."

DXB and Changi are the two busiest international transit airports outside Europe. For travellers on long-haul routes between Europe/Asia and Australia/Africa, both are common 6–24 hour layovers — and both reward layover passengers with city access via excellent metro systems.

For the layover use case, the choice is rarely either/or — you might land at one and depart from the other. But the comparison matters for business travellers picking which to stay overnight in, and for tourists who can only choose one Gulf or Southeast Asian transit destination.

Questions.

  • Which airport is better for a 6-hour layover?

Changi by a wide margin. The MRT to downtown takes 30 minutes, vs Dubai's metro at 45 minutes plus security re-entry. Both have excellent free Wi-Fi as a fallback.

  • Will WhatsApp work in both?

Text yes in both. Voice calls: blocked in UAE, allowed in Singapore. For UAE, use Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.

  • Is 1 GB really enough for a layover?

For a 6–8 hour layover with maps, restaurant lookup, and a few photos: yes, easily. Skip if you're hotspotting a laptop.
