Why Turkey is different

"Turkey charges a one-time "phone registration tax" on any foreign IMEI used more than 120 days — roughly 31,000 Lira ($900+) as of 2025. An eSIM from home bypasses the rule entirely for short stays."

Turkey is a currency-arbitrage tourism market — a weak Lira means Western travellers buy heavily, but local SIMs have strict 120-day IMEI registration rules. If you plan to use a phone more than 120 days Turkey requires a 31,000+ Lira tax to keep it active. An eSIM sidesteps this entirely.

Our Turkey plans run on Turkcell, which has by far the best coverage in eastern Turkey, the Black Sea region, and along the Lycian hiking trail. Vodafone TR is the backup for Istanbul-centric travellers.

Coverage you can actually measure.

We run Turkey on 2 carriers so your profile falls back automatically if one signal drops. Coverage figures are measured against our own uptime data, not carrier marketing claims.

Troubleshooting

  • Cappadocia balloon flights at altitude may lose signal depending on flight path — land-based activities are fine.
  • Eastern Turkey (Van, Doğubayazıt) has Turkcell-only coverage in many villages.
  • WhatsApp and Twitter are occasionally throttled on Turkish networks — this is government policy, not a plan issue.

Who Turkey eSIM is built for.

  • Cappadocia balloon guest

Göreme has full 5G. Your balloon photos upload in real time.

  • Lycian Way hiker

500 km coastal trail between Fethiye and Antalya. Turkcell has the only reliable signal on the more remote stages.

  • Istanbul transit visitor

IST and SAW are both major transit hubs. A 1 GB plan covers a Bosphorus ferry ride and back.

Questions people actually ask.

  • Turkey requires any foreign-IMEI phone used on a Turkish SIM for more than 120 days to be registered with the government, which triggers a tax currently around 31,000 Lira ($900+). An eSIM on international roaming bypasses this entirely for short stays.
