Key takeaway
"People who switch from airport SIM booths to travel eSIMs almost never switch back. The single-trip cost savings are enough; the time savings are a bonus."
If you have never bought a travel eSIM before, the whole thing can feel like one more piece of admin to figure out before a trip. Ten minutes of reading will remove that feeling permanently. After you do it once, the mental model is "buy QR, scan QR, flip settings, travel connected".
This guide is the absolute shortest end-to-end version, written for someone who has bought physical tourist SIMs before but never an eSIM.
Before the trip: pick and buy
Go to our destinations page, pick the country you're visiting, and choose a plan size. For a typical 7–14 day leisure trip, 5–10 GB is plenty. For a nomad month or heavy work trip, pick unlimited. Pay with card or Apple Pay, receive a QR code and an activation email within 30 seconds.
Before you board: install
Open the email, scan the QR with your phone. iOS: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → Add eSIM. Label the profile, set it as your data line, confirm Data Roaming is ON on the travel line and OFF on the home line. Takes under a minute.
On landing: use
Land. Toggle airplane mode once if you haven't seen a signal within 30 seconds. Your phone should connect to the partner carrier in the destination country and start using the travel data plan. Open Google Maps and confirm you have internet — that's the fastest test.
During the trip: manage
Monitor your data usage via Settings. If you're getting low, top up from your eSIM Garden account on any Wi-Fi — the top-up applies to the existing profile, no new QR. After the trip, you can remove the profile or keep it for next time.
Questions people actually ask.
- No. You buy from anywhere — your living room couch in London works fine. The eSIM downloads as a profile and activates when you physically arrive in the destination country.
