eSIM hotspot tethering: what is actually allowed

Tethering a laptop through your travel eSIM is the single most common nomad and business use case. It is also where providers differ most in their small print.

Key takeaway

"Holafly, one of the largest travel eSIM providers, restricts hotspot tethering on most of its unlimited plans. Airalo's policy varies by region. We include hotspot on every plan at every tier."

Hotspot tethering — sharing your phone's mobile data with a laptop, tablet, or second phone over Wi-Fi — is a first-class use case for travel eSIMs. It's also where providers differ sharply. Some allow it freely. Some restrict it on unlimited plans. A few block it entirely.

Here is the honest breakdown of what to expect and how to check before you buy.

How tethering works technically

Your phone becomes a Wi-Fi access point, broadcasting an SSID your laptop or other device connects to. The phone routes traffic from those devices through its mobile data connection. Modern iPhones and Android flagships support this natively — Settings → Personal Hotspot on iOS, Settings → Network → Hotspot on Android. No app required.

Where providers block it

Two common restriction patterns. (1) Unlimited plans that specifically exclude hotspot — the plan is "unlimited to the phone, capped to tether". This is the Holafly pattern and catches a lot of nomads who need to work from a laptop. (2) Hotspot allowed but capped to the daily Fair Use threshold — typically 1 GB/day, which runs out fast on a video call. Always read the fine print on unlimited plans specifically.

Fair Use thresholds

Even where hotspot is allowed, most unlimited plans impose a Fair Use Policy that reduces speeds after a threshold. Typical thresholds: 1–2 GB per day for genuinely unlimited plans. After the threshold, speeds drop to 1 Mbps — still fine for maps and messaging, not fine for HD video. Our plans disclose the Fair Use threshold up front on every plan detail page.

Our policy, plain text

Every eSIM Garden plan — local, regional, global, pilgrimage — includes hotspot tethering at no extra charge. Fair Use is 1 GB per day on unlimited plans. Metered plans use the allowance exactly as displayed with no tethering penalty. If you need unlimited tethering for heavy video conferencing from the road, our monthly unlimited is the correct default.

Questions people actually ask.

  • Yes. Tethering is indistinguishable from direct phone data usage from the network's perspective — the same bytes are counted the same way. Fair Use limits apply to the total, not to each device separately.
