Why Malaysia is different

"Malaysian Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) has genuine cellular dead zones in the interior rainforest — not just slow, literally offline. Even Maxis, the leader, covers under 60% of Borneo's landmass."

Malaysia is split by the South China Sea into Peninsular Malaysia (KL, Penang, Langkawi) and Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak). The two halves have very different coverage profiles — urban Peninsular is excellent, rural Borneo is thinner than most Malaysian visitors expect.

Our Malaysia plans use Maxis primarily with Celcom as fallback. Maxis has the strongest national coverage including the Borneo highlands.

Coverage you can actually measure.

We run Malaysia on 2 carriers so your profile falls back automatically if one signal drops. Coverage figures are measured against our own uptime data, not carrier marketing claims.

Troubleshooting

  • Borneo interior (Mulu, Danum Valley): expect multi-day offline stretches regardless of carrier.
  • Langkawi and Tioman islands covered only in populated areas.
  • Peninsular east coast (Terengganu, Kelantan) has patchier coverage than the west coast.

Who Malaysia eSIM is built for.

  • KL + Singapore day-tripper

Ride the ETS from KL to JB and cross the causeway. Fully covered on the Malaysian side.

  • Penang food tourist

George Town street food hawker markets all have full 5G for translation and navigation.

  • Borneo wildlife viewer

Kota Kinabalu and Kuching are well-covered; jungle lodges have Wi-Fi but no cellular beyond.
