Why South Korea is different

"Korea has the strictest SIM rules in Asia — a tourist physically cannot buy a prepaid SIM without an ARC card. An eSIM is the only option for short-term visitors."

South Korea has the fastest average 5G speeds in the world according to Opensignal and the strictest SIM rules in Asia — physical tourist SIMs require an Alien Registration Card (ARC), which short-term visitors never have. Airport booths sell "tourist" SIMs, but they're marked up 3–4× over wholesale and limited to 30-day validity.

An eSIM bought abroad skips all of it. Our Korea plans route through SK Telecom and KT. SK Telecom has the fastest Seoul 5G and the cleanest Jeju island coverage. KT is strong on the KTX rail routes.

Coverage you can actually measure.

We run South Korea on 2 carriers so your profile falls back automatically if one signal drops. Coverage figures are measured against our own uptime data, not carrier marketing claims.

Troubleshooting

  • Korea uses CDMA-derived network identifiers — a handful of very old Android devices will refuse to register. All devices from 2019 onward are fine.
  • Jeju Island is covered but some volcanic interior hiking trails have SK Telecom-only signal.
  • DMZ tour zones near the North Korean border have deliberate signal restrictions — this is security policy, not a plan issue.

Who South Korea eSIM is built for.

  • K-pop concert visitor

Seoul concert nights drive massive network congestion. Dual-carrier fallback keeps Instagram stories uploading.

  • Jeju Island hiker

Jeju is a UNESCO site with thousands of hiking kilometres. SK Telecom has the only reliable signal in the Hallasan volcanic interior.

  • KTX rail traveller

KT-preferred routing for the Seoul–Busan and Seoul–Gangneung routes.

Questions people actually ask.

  • Yes. Korean regulations require all prepaid SIMs to be tied to a verified Korean or resident ID. Tourist SIMs sold at the airport are technically exceptions but cost 3–4× wholesale and are limited to 30 days. An eSIM is the simplest frictionless option.
